Tips for someone learning to play the harmonica?
Someone gave me a toy harmonica and is pretty fun. I only had one day and I've learned from simple notes, bends, the breathing of my diaphragm, and I have to learn to play Hey Jude The Beatles. The next time I go to the music store I will get a real (or two), I noticed from browsing online there are different keys, should I stick with a C or maybe a G (they seem like the most common keys). If this sounds like something I'm really interested in after a while I will one of these media harmonica around his neck so I could play my guitar. So do you have any advice for someone learn to play and to buy a harmonica? I really want to learn to play because I was learning to write my own songs on guitar and it would be cool to add harmonica to it.
C is the most common because most tutorials out there are done on a harp C. This is useful for playing in C (not a key uncommon for folk music) and G (crossharp). Guitarists tend to like to play in the OF and A (sharp keys) and a huge amount of music in the folk, the county, bluegrass, blues and genres is there. As you would crossharp A (on D), B (E) and E (A). You'll get a harp crossharp D G (G is therefore a key to popular clean). Horn players (players especially jazz) as wrenches - in largely because their instruments tend to be either Eb or Bb. C, Bb, and F are good to play with horn players. In crossharp you would on a C harp F Bb Eb on a harp, and F on a Bb harp. C gives you the harp in G crossharp which is simply a strong key for horn players. So that's the key. If you play alone It does not matter at all. If you play with others, then you must be in the same key, they are. If you play a lot of different music, with many people different, you will need a set of keys. If you write a lot of music, analyze what the key ways you tend to write in - probably what you like best ear. What harp you buy depends on your personal taste and what you play. 10-hole diatonic can not be beaten for the blues and playing the "rope trick three" vamping rope. A good choice there Hohner and in particular the Marine Band, Special 20, Blues Harp (not Blues Band), Big River. etc.. The Manji Suzuki gets some really good comments as are FolkMaster and Bluesmaster. The Hering 1923 Blues Harp is a pretty sweet too. People love them rave about Lee Oskar harps. As diatonic go, I like my plain old Hohner marine band. They have stood the test time and countless pros. If you are leaning toward folk / gospel songs but want a 10-hole diatonic Richter Hohner Golden Melody then is really popular. This is also ideal for playing with horns, as it does not just time - equal tempered. They just sound right on melodic lines. If you are really eager to play tunes and melodic stuff (Jazz, classical, etc.). Then a color is the best way to go. The educator Hohner 10 can be had for about $ 50 but the Hohner 270 Chromonica will make you happier (and poorer bits). Chromatics use a control system scales different that those notes are not lacking in the background, but they are not as great for vamping strings. Some great players to use the blues well. The Hohner Marine Band 364 Soloist is set as a color but does not slide - it's great to start on color. Also much less expensive. Then there are the tremolo and octaves. These are quite popular everywhere except the United States. The Hohners tend to look like a French cafe accordion, the Suzuki is not as "wet". Most are Hohners Richter tuned - most Asians are solo tuned. The Hohner Echo Celeste is solo tuned and it is really cheap for a great tremolo. The harp is a Hohner Comet Octave fantastic. All the high end Hohner Echo Harp and Su24H Suzuki are excellent examples of the style. They are to play melodies and tunes often accompanied or with a single guitar. They are not so good for blowing the blues because it is equally difficult to fold two reeds at the same time. Octaves and tremolos have a double reed for each location to lend them the distinctive sound. It seems, however, you should probably be leaning toward the 10-hole diatonic in a few paragraphs above. You can hear most of these being read by simply typing the model name on YouTube. Some played well, others not. My harp is a very old Hohner better watch Old G back when this model had a wooden comb. It was cheap at the time - as a few dollars. It sounds better than any harp I have $ 50 and I have more than a few. Tip: If you want a full set now and build slowly over time - get all of Piedmont blues and a good 10 holes. The Piedmont Blues comes with a case is worth about as much as the total cost (under $ 25) and as you build your collection just take the plastic off of the case Piedmont and replace it with your right. If you keep a harp own (they are plastic, you can wash them) - gives the Piedmont Blues harps young parents as you replace them. Good Read and be prepared to suffer the dreaded disease harmonica acquisition syndrome - you can never own enough harmonicas.
